RACHEL JEMMETT
My introduction to art was at a very early age – I used to draw all over the wallpaper, much to my parent’s anguish! With their guidance (& supervision!) they encouraged me in this direction and in 1989 I won the Junior Art Award at Ashburton College. Tertiary education in Christchurch then followed and it wasn’t until I returned home that I picked up the paintbrush again.
Over the last 10 years or so my style has developed considerably. Working with colour and experimenting with different textures gives my painting a twist with a style of their own. The colour I create is actually mixed on the canvas while working on it. I mainly use acrylic paints with a mixed media to create an impression or expression depending on the end result. Basically when I start painting I don’t know what the finished picture will look like and that makes it exciting for me!
I get inspiration from my environment and the people and objects around me. My current work revolves around city scenes focusing on the structures and shapes of the various buildings we pass by, work and live in.
